Alpaca Fiber

Golden Pine Alpacas' breeding program concentrates on developing fine-quality fleeces from a variety of colored alpacas, in addition to white. Fiber from our alpacas is processed into yarns, rovings, woven rugs, pillows, knitted and woven apparel, and many types of needle-felted items.

About Alpaca Fiber

  • The terms luxury and alpacas are becoming synonymous.
  • Alpaca fleece rivals cashmere and angora for fineness.
  • It is warmer, lighter, and stronger than sheep's wool.
  • It comes in 22 natural colors.
  • It is hypoallergenic, free from dander and lanolin.
  • It is naturally flame-retardant.
  • The "prickle factor" found in sheep wool is not found in alpaca fleece.

For the above qualities, alpaca is the fiber of choice by top fashion designers and the reason people the world over prefer alpaca.

Alpaca Fiber Quality

Fineness is a very important part of good quality alpaca fiber. The finer the fleece, the softer the feel and the higher the price paid for that fleece. Fineness is measured in microns. Fleece samples from Golden Pine's alpacas are routinely tested for fiber quality through a laser scan process called a histogram.

Hand (or handle)
is the subjective feel of a fleece. It is associated with the uniformity of the fiber throughout the fleece, combined with its fineness, or AFD.

Luster or brightness in fleece is highly desirable. It is the shine produced when light reflects back off the fiber.

The two alpaca breed-types are: Huacaya and Suri. Huacaya (pronounced wa-ky-a) fleece is usually crimpy, and grows out perpendicularly from the alpaca's body, giving Huacaya a "fluffy" appearance. Suri fleece has a long, silky look, and hangs straight down from where it grows on the alpaca's body. About 10 percent of alpacas in the U.S. are Suris. Golden Pine Alpacas are Huacaya. Many hand-spinners enjoy working with natural alpaca colors. The Alpaca Registry defines 22 colors, ranging from whites to fawns to browns, grays and blacks (often with many shades in-between!).

Alpaca woven rugs are another popular product of our alpaca fleece. We send lesser-quality fleece in a combination of colors from the lower legs, topknots, and tails to a business in Texas which weaves it into durable and attractive rugs with a choice of designs. When the rugs come back, it is fun to point out a black band of color contributed by Midgey Lou and a white stripe by Brandy.
